AND
NOW A WORD FROM GREG WILSON : |
|
During my research for an article I was writing called “When Punk Met
Funk” (Grandslam magazine 2003 - please find below), I exchanged a number
of e-mails with ZE co-founder, Michel Esteban. Amongst other things, I
learnt that he was planning to commission various remixers to update a
number of the label’s classic tracks. |

Having been told this, it occurred to me that another way to present ZE
to a contemporary audience, without compromising the underground integrity
of the label, would be via a re-edits project, with the name ZE-EDITS pretty
much suggesting itself! |

As the quintessential New York No Wave label back in the late 70’s / early
80’s, ZE was always at the cutting edge, and now, during recent times,
the label has come to the attention of a whole new generation of music
enthusiasts, especially those who’ve grown tired of the repetitive beats
that have dominated the club scene for longer than anyone cares to remember,
and are looking back to a more organic time in order to find the inspiration
to move forwards once again. |

The old order is crumbling and there’s an ever-growing movement back to
the underground. The term Proto-House is now being used to define the hybrid
era that followed the demise of Disco, whilst heralding the birth of dance
culture as we now know it. All of a sudden many people are discovering
that its origins aren’t in Chicago or Detroit, as they’d previously been
led to believe, but in New York, where dance music was re-defined in a
blaze of creativity during this period. |

ZE, with a foot in the past, but an eye on the future, is perfectly placed
to help bridge the gap, splicing then to now via the innovation of its
artists and the records they made, which still sound fresh all these years
on. |

ZE-EDITS will take this process full-circle, re-arranging rather than remixing the original recordings, to revive these classic tracks in a way that will appeal to today’s dance underground. |

Having received the go-ahead from Michel to set the wheels in motion, I began to approach the right type of people to work on the project. The feedback has been as positive as I’d expected, just the name ZE is enough to inspire an outpouring of enthusiasm. |

It’s an honour to co-ordinate such a wonderful project, which I’m sure
will enhance ZE’s already substantial legacy. Apart from my own words,
which will introduce ZE-EDITS, Bill Brewster, the highly respected co-author
of the book “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life - The History Of The DJ”,
has offered to write the sleevenotes. Bill, a successful DJ himself, will
also be putting together his own edits for the project. |

Night A DJ Saved My Life - The History Of The DJ”を共同執筆者として高く信頼されているBill Brewsterがレコード解説を書くことを申し出ました。
